May-June Wrap Up 2026

A Message From Our Superintendent

Dear Families,

Well, we tried to warn you that May (and June) would be action packed. Our wonderful students have been on exciting field trips, had parties and field days, shared lunch with family, and made lasting memories.

The last weeks of school were unusually stressful for our staff with the loss of Internet for over a week. Thank you to our staff and families for their patience while we navigated this breach. As I reported earlier, hackers were not able to access student records and the work will continue over the summer to confirm what files they may have accessed. No ransom was paid. It took about a week to rebuild our network, thanks to the tireless efforts of our excellent IT Department.

But nothing could dim the joy in the last month of school. We'd like to leave you with just a glimpse into some of these honored and fun-filled traditions.

We'll be around most of the summer if you need us, and we are already planning another great year of meaningful education for Ellensburg kids.

Thank you for your continued support of our local Ellensburg schools and students.

Your Partner in Education,
Superintendent Troy Tornow
school begins Sept.. 8

Yumminess at Every Turn

We can't talk about Spring without talking about our ESD Child Nutrition team. Besides all the breakfasts and lunches they routinely serve, they hosted four elementary barbecues and a spectacular senior breakfast in two weeks time.

Before you ask, yes, it was locally sourced and homemade, including homemade pickles! At the barbecues students and guests got to choose between hamburgers or pulled pork sandwiches. Ellensburg’s own Meeks Farm provided the beef. The pork came from Olsens Farm in Colville, and the apples were from Rowley and Hawkins in Othello.

"The senior breakfast is always a capstone event at the end of the year for our department," says Alexandra Epstein-Solfield, director of Child Nutrition. "Our incredible kitchen lead (at EHS) Heather outdid herself once again. This is her final year with us, so we hope the students felt the love she put into it.
How cute are the waffle cone cups?!"

Thank you to our number one yum team for making these events so special!

Board Celebrates Retirees

The ESD Board of Directors honored this year's retirees with a celebration and refreshments on May 27.

Superintendent Troy Tornow said a few words about each retiree, sharing accolades and well wishes from their supervisors. Each retiree was presented with an apple-shaped bell that included their names, years of service to ESD and the District logo.

Thank you to each and every one of these fine men and women who have devoted their careers to making life better for the children of Ellensburg.

Choirs, Orchestras, and Strike Up the Bands

ESD students spent May uniting the community in music. in addition to the end of year concerts, students took their show on the road to provide entertainment for our community.

  • Ida Nason Aronica Choir was asked to record a new version of former principal Rod Goosman’s “Ellensburg Song”. They took a field trip to CWU to record with Choral Professor Dr. Law and CWU student Maddie.
  • The Lincoln Music Club and the Mt Stuart Choir performed at Unity Park on Children's Day downtown.
  • The Morgan Middle School orchestra performed live on Ellensburg Community Radio.
  • The Ellensburg High School Band ROCKED graduation with not only the expected, but great pre-show music.

Congratulations to all of our student who share the gift of music with their peers, families and our community.

Fifth Graders Go to Camp

Fifth Grade Camp at Lazy F has been a rite of passage for all Ellensburg 5th grade students for decades. This year was no exception with all four elementary schools sending the 5th grade class to camp. Not only do the students learn new skills, but camp offers a chance to bond before the big shift to Morgan Middle School.

Students enjoyed outdoor activities, like climbing and fishing, and in the evenings cuddled into their sleeping bags for treats and a movie. If exhaustion is any measure of fun, they all had a great time!

Field Day Mania

Even though the weather didn't always cooperate, our students have been living their best lives with parties, games, field days and all other matter of uproarious fun.

Every school has their own traditions and flavors of fun. Lincoln and Mt. Stuart had awesome obstacle courses. Valley View hosted the always fun color run. At Ida, students got a cool off thanks to Kittitas County Fire and Rescue. Everyone got to run and play outside. Staff and parents did a great job of setting up fun obstacle courses and activities!

Hello and Goodbye

The are graduations and then there is GRADUATION.

Elementary schools are saying goodbye to their 5th graders, Morgan is saying goodbye to their 8th graders, and we are all saying goodbye to the Class of 2026.

Valley View's PTO threw a fun-filled party for their 5th graders at West Ellensburg Park. In addition to the sports and games, student were provided with lunch, Italian soda and a candy bar. Face painting was very popular. The day ended with a tug of war and trophy.

Morgan Hosts Foamy Fun

Later that evening, Morgan said goodbye to the 8th graders (the Class of 2030!) with a big party at Ellensburg High School.

In the Commons, student were treated to pizza, Italian soda, a candy bar, a photo booth and tiny temporary tattoos. In the gym students played sports, threw inflatable axes and played poker, among the many activities. But the real draw was the foam party. At the end of a foam party you don't hose down, but luckily Mr. Teasley was on had with a leaf blower to clean them off!

The Class of 2026

Family, friends, teachers and well-wishers packed Nicolson Pavilion to celebrate the Class of 2026.

Ellensburg High School Band kicked off the festivities with Pomp and Circumstance, and the National Anthem, delivering the quality performance we have come to expect from Warren Murray and the Band.

The speaker chosen by the class was Civics teacher Marco Bicchieri, who shared a message of love. Not big gestures and grand love, but the small connections we make as friends and neighbors every day. He shared quotes from four major religions, all with the same message of kindness, tolerance and love for our fellow humans.

Graduates shared their talent with musical performances. Natalie Johnson and Mystic Hammond performed “In My Life,” by The Beatles. “The Road Home,” was presented acapella by Locklen Heflin, Collin McGuire, Natalie Johnson, Yutong Liang, and Brynlee Weber.

Graduates Yutong Liang and Nina Gonzalez were chosen by EHS faculty in a “blind ballot” system as the speakers representing the Class of 2026.

After Superintendent Troy Tornow certified the graduates, Board President Cindy Coe and Board Members Mike Rowley, Cathie Day and Jeff Dermond presented them with their well-earned diplomas. EHS teachers Liz Zentner and Charlie Acheson read the names of the grads as they proudly stepped onto the stage.

Class President Yutong Liang had the crowd do a clap down and the Class of 2026 turned their tassels and threw their hats into the air triumphantly.

When they got on the bus, they were giddy seniors. When they searched the crowd for family and friends, you could see the tender faces of the kindergarteners they once were. And when they stepped off the bus for the senior party, they were alumni.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026 and to all the teachers, staff members, helpers, healers, and most especially families, who got them to the finish line!
